Prescribing Wisely: changing the way we prescribe
This engagement is now closed
Last year your local NHS spent £15 million on products, including paracetamol, that you can easily buy in pharmacies, high street shops and supermarkets.
The demand for healthcare is constantly rising, but budgets are not increasing at the same rate. We need to save nearly £135 million across the eight boroughs, around 5% of our annual expenditure, in the financial year 2017/18 to balance our budget.
The NHS North West London Collaboration of Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) asked local people to participate in the ongoing discussions about health spending in the borough. The survey closed on Friday 30 June 2017 and we received 1,228 responses.
We asked respondents to read three proposals we identified where we can save money without affecting patients' health.
We believe that these three Prescribing Wisely proposals will help reduce waste and give patients more control over their repeat prescriptions.
Proposal 1: GPs will ask patients if they are willing to buy certain medicines or products which can be bought without a prescription.
For more information on proposal 1 and a full list of medicines and products it includes please click here.
Proposal 2: GPs will not routinely prescribe the medicines and products listed below which can be bought without a prescription.
For more information on proposal 2 and a full list of medicines and products it includes please click here.
Proposal 3: Ask patients to order their own repeat prescriptions where possible
For more information on proposal 3 and a full list of medicines and products it includes please click here.

This survey is now closed.
Engagement around these proposals has now been completed and the proposals have been adjusted to reflect feedback we received from the engagement. The proposals went to each CCG’s Governing Body for decision making during the month of July.
